Yesterday we published news about our new lavender additions to Hangerworld’s product line. In another coup for the benefits of lavender, it was reported in late December/ early January 2013 that Kate Middleton had taken to eating lavender shortbread in an attempt to battle her hyperemesis gravadarum.

Lavender has long been used to naturally relieve nausea alongside other healing properties which the plant holds. Often pregnant women place a few drops of lavender into their bath but it seems the Duchess of Cornwall, Catherine’s step-mother-in-law, recommended she try thr biscuits.

Since trying them the Royal family have been sending Catherine boxes of the biscuits. According to press sources, the Duchess has been joking that some women crave raw onions when they are pregnant but she is trying to keep it classy.

How The Humble Hanger Can Maintain Your Clothing’s Lifespan

They come in a variety of sizes and materials and each one seems to have a different unique selling point; from padded and non-slip through to grips and clips.

The humble clothes hanger may appear on the surface to fulfil a rather boring occupation but the importance of it’s role cannot be underestimated. Choose the right hanger and your clothes will keep their shape, store well and reduce the amount of crinked clothing coming out of your wardrobe – in a nutshell it will prolong your clothes lifespan. on the flip side of the coin, a hanger which is too wide might poke out of the sleeves of your favourite coat or jacket, altering it’s form, and thus ruining a garment.

So how do you choose the right hanger for your wardrobe? The most important factor is to determine the type of garment the hanger is supporting. It is probably not worth buying expensive wooden hangers for thin, cheap t-shirts; however, if you have spent money on a new suit or coat then wooden hangers will be well worth the investment for the reason that they will help keep the garment in its form which has been shaped to contour your body. Get it right and your clothes will thank you for it.

Plastic Hangers 

Plastic hangers can be split into two types: very lightweight, inexpensive hangers designed for lightweight items such as t-shirts; or sturdy, well-shaped hangers designed for suits and coats, which will last for many years (these generally have wide-rounded shoulders which will not cause hanger marks on clothing). Some styles come with bars for hanging trousers over or clips for hanging skirts up.

Fabric Padded 

Padded hangers are usually covered in satin or another smooth fabric in order to prevent clothes from snagging. They are designed for lightweight items and are sometimes used for  lingerie. Padded hangers are not designed for heavy garments and using them for heavier items will cause shoulder bumps. Often padded hangers have buttons sewn into the edges to prevent straps from slipping off the hanger. They do not tend to feature a bar or clips for trousers and skirts.

Wood     

Wooden hangers are durable and can easily handle heavier items of clothing. Their strength allows them to carry coats, suits or gowns and ensure they keep their shape. Wooden hangers also offer protection to clothes due to their shape which prevents items from being hung too closely together – allowing more air flow and less abrasion between each item which in turn, means the clothes will last for longer. Wooden hangers come in several styles with or without bars, clips or grips; there is also a wide range of non-slip wooden hangers.

Flocked

Flocked hangers are perfect for light items. The velvet covering provides ample grip for clothing, stopping items from slipping whilst saving space within your wardrobe.

Metal and Wire

These are particularly popular amongst dry cleaning businesses, ironing companies and laundry services. They are inexpensive and come in a variety of styles, although long-term use is not recomended, likewise they are unsuitable for heavier garments.

Non-Slip Hangers

Non-slip hangers are a very popular product for those that like to keep their wardrobe well-organised. The keep clothing in good order, ensuring that garments remain hung perfectly in place, reducing the likelihood of items falling down and getting dusty or creased. They come in a wide range of styles, varieties and materials and there is a non-slip hanger available for almost each type of garment.

Top Tips

  • Avoid wire hangers for all but the lightest of clothing such as shirts.
  • Shirts should be buttoned up when hanging as this helps to avoid creasing.
  • Hang black clothing inside out, this way it will not pick up fluff from other clothes around it.
  • Straighten the shirt or jacket so that the topmost part of the shoulder rests at the crest of the hanger.

Make Your Wardrobe Work With You This Spring

Spring is just around the corner with the promise of warmer weather approaching, which means that now is the perfect time to give your wardrobe a spring clean. Having spent the winter accumulating bulky clothes as well as extra blankets and duvet’s for your bed, it is likely that any spare space in your bedroom is filling up rapidly alongside your wardrobe, leaving no room for all your gorgeous spring and summer items.

The problem is that organising and storing all those winter woollies is often a traumatic job that we look for excuses to avoid… until the wardrobe gives way under all the strain, as happened to me last year.

Having spent months stuffing ‘just one more top’ into my poor wardrobe, it decided it had had enough of me and collapsed in a sorry heap of jumbled up clothes, shoes and bags onto the floor. The sorry mess did provide a silver lining however, as sorting out my clothes became a job which could no longer be avoided.

Here’s How I Went About It

1. The first thing to do is empty your wardrobe contents onto the bed and sort into piles – things to keep, things to throw away, items to sell or donate to local charities, and finally, a ‘maybe’ pile.

2. Anything stained or worn needs to go straight away. Try clothes on and anything that doesn’t fit you any longer should also go,  eventually you should end up with a ‘keep’ and ‘maybe’ pile. Check through both piles a few times and you should end up with just a ‘keep’ pile.

3. Anything in the ‘keep’ pile that isn’t suitable for this time of year can be packed away. Utilise the space in your home – bulky winter clothing and bed linen can be placed into underbed storage chests, or vacuum sealed storage bags which can be put in the loft. My wedding dress was taking up wardrobe space, but this was rectified by placing it in a protective cover to keep it in good condition and again, storing it safely in the loft.

Wardrobe Essentials                                                                                                  

Having decided what to keep and stored all of your autumn/winter clothes away, it is time to start putting your clothes back into your wardrobe. There are many ways in which to organise your wardrobe, I chose to sort mine by garment type and colour, simply because I am always looking for my ‘knee length white skirt’ or ‘high neck pink going-out top’.

This is where it really pays to ensure your wardrobe staples are in good condition. Using good quality wooden hangers and shoe racks for example, will not only help organise your wardrobe more effectively, but they will keep your clothes in good condition for longer.

Top Tips

  • Hang all you dresses at one end of the wardrobe as this allows you to utilise the floorspace in the rest of the wardrobe with shoe racks/ boxes containing bags, etc…
  • Ensure you include moth-repellent cedar to prevent moths from laying eggs in any clothing being stored for the season.
  • Place rolled up magazines in boots to keep them in shape and ensure nothing sits on them which might crush them.
  • Ensure any clothes returning from the dry cleaners are taken out of the plastic when they return home. The chemicals in dry cleaning can turn clothes yellow if they are left in the plastic too long. If you want to cover your clothes use a fabric garment bag.

Remember – the point of giving your wardrobe a spring clean (as well as to ensure it doesn’t topple down in  sorry mess), is so that you know exactly what you have got and can find items easily. If it looks a little bare after sorting, then an added bonus is that you can go shopping for more items to re-fill it with!

 

Make use of your old metal hangers!

Transform your hangers from plain old hangers to these handy unique shoe hangers by following these simple steps – will only work with plain metal hangers.

  1. Get your old plain hangers ready, along with a pair of pliers, some decorative ribbon and glue. You will need the pliers to cut through the metal.
  2. Cut your hangers at the bottom (exactly in the middle) with your pliers.
  3. Take each side of the hanger you have just cut and bend them upwards – as shown in the picture.
  4. Take your ribbon and wrap it round the top of the hanger, just underneath the hook (as shown in the picture). Make sure you use glue and allow the glue to dry before hanging your shoes on the hangers.
  5. Once you are satisfied with your new transformed hangers, you can put them to use. Gather up your shoes and start hanging them on your uniquely designed shoe hangers!

Hotel hanger crisis!

A most extraordinary trial happened in the High Court back in 2002, in which a man named Chrysler was accused of stealing more than 40,000 coat hangers from hotels round the world. Basically, in 2002 a man called Chrysler was accused of stealing 40,000 hotel hangers from hotels all over the world. His reason for doing this was because he “builds and sells wardrobes which are specially designed to take nothing but hotel coat hangers”.

  1. Firstly, you will need a ball of wool (any colour of your choice), your plain hangers and some decorations, e.g. Flowers or butterflies (once again choose what suites you).
  2. Once you have everything you need, you can get to work on giving your hangers the make over they deserve. Firstly, you need to get the wool and wrap it around the entire hanger. Make sure the wool is tightly wrapped around the hanger to make sure that it does not become loose and come apart.
  3. Then, you need to attach the decorations you have, for example if you have a woollen flower decoration or any other decorations, you can simply use super glue and glue these decorations anywhere on your hanger to make them unique.
  4. Allow the glue for the decorations to dry and once you are satisfied with the improved image of your hangers, you can now start hanging your clothes in style!

Neatly pressed clothes make a good impression, but many people often find that they lack the time or patience to keep their wardrobe wrinkle-free. As a result, many are choosing to hire out someone to do the job for them. This growing demand provides a great opportunity for you to set up your own at-home ironing business.

To set up your own ironing business, you will need to do the following:

1. Acquire the equipment needed to set up your business. If you are unable to obtain the equipment from your clients, then you will need clothes hangers, an iron or two, ironing board, a water spray bottle and starch. You will need a good quality iron that offers plenty of features, such as steam, no steam different heat settings for different types of clothes fabrics and safety features such as automatic shut off. Your ironing board should be sturdy to prevent it from tipping over or wobbling and must be adjusted to a height that is right for you. If you are planning to use wire hangers, then you may wish to use covers to ensure that the clothes are kept protected from the metal.

2. Decide on what services your at-home ironing business will include. What items of clothing will you include? Will your services just cover professional items such as dress shirts or will you expand it to drapes and household items such as table clothes?

3. Do some market research. Find out if there are people in your area that would benefit from your service and whether or not they would pay. People that require their clothes to be pressed regularly, such as professionals or military personnel are the ones to aim for. Consider browsing your phone book or researching other ironing business online, as this will give you an idea of what services they offer and the type of people they provide their services for.

4. Start setting up your business. You will need to decide on a name for your business and what type of business it will be. Will you be the sole proprietor? Or will you be a Limited Liability Company? (LLC). If you are planning to be the sole proprietor, then your business will be much easier to set up and run, as there is less paperwork involved. However, becoming an LLC will also provide you with a number of advantages, including tax advantages and protection of your personal assets during lawsuits. Once you have decided what type of business you will be, you will need to obtain the licenses and permits that are needed for your city or country in order to get properly set up.

5. Decide what your rates will be. How much will you charge for each item that you iron? Will you offer discounts for those that use your services regularly?

6. Promote your business. Decide whether or not you will use business cards, fliers or both, and once you have created them, start distributing them in areas where your target market will see them. Place your cards or fliers in stores and consider placing an advert in your local newspaper. If you haven’t already done so, phone or email your friends, family and other contacts to make them aware of your business.

7. Start your at-home ironing business. Issue a press release to your local newspapers and other media. Request referrals from clients that are happy with your services.
